What happens
The AVMA describes euthanasia as an injection that brings deep, irreversible unconsciousness almost immediately, followed by a painless death. Many vets give a sedative first so your cat is relaxed. Twitching or a deep breath afterward is a reflex, not pain.
Home or clinic
Some veterinarians come to your home, which many cats find calmer than a car ride. The AVMA also notes you can say goodbye at home the evening before a clinic appointment.
Aftercare
Decide ahead of time on burial, cremation or another option, as the AVMA suggests. Ask whether cremation is included, and whether it is private, with ashes returned, or communal.
Questions to ask your vet
- How will we know it is time?
- Can family be there, and can we have time alone with our cat?
- What do the aftercare choices involve and cost?
Prices shared by cat owners
Where these numbers come from
We never estimate or copy prices from elsewhere. Every figure on this page was shared by a cat owner, and a typical price only shows once five owners have shared one. Health facts on this page come from:
- AVMA, Pet euthanasia (client brochure, 2025). Checked October 25, 2026.
Prices differ a lot between towns and clinics, so treat these as a starting point and ask your vet for a quote.
